Year Graduated: 2019

Marina Kremer grew up in a small-town, in the southwestern corner of Minnesota. Born into a large family in 1996, she grew up with a strong sense of community and encouragement, that she also found in her faith. Spending most of her time imagining and playing in the muddy, flower-filled pastures of her farm, and the rest of her time attending Murray County Central Schools from kindergarten to high school graduation. Marina was pushed to use her strengths of optimism and being a visual learner to enhance her artwork. Fascinated with exploration and preserving memories, Marina continues working with her hands and nature as a multi-passionate ambitious woman and printmaker. Pursuing her dreams to learn more about the world, she has attended the University of South Dakota since 2015 earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Learning various methods, history, and the importance of art, Marina studied under printmaking professor Johntimothy Pizzuto. Marina attended Frogman’s summer of 2018 refining her screen printing techniques under John Hitchcock, while networking with other printmakers across the nation; she plans to attend many more Frogman’s in the future. Other future plans include working towards the community’s access to art and its benefits through community education and after school programs.

Artist Statement

My paintings are inspired by floriography and the Language of Flowers guidebook, where I was able to study flowers broadly without limiting myself to species found in only the Midwest. Painting various plants and flowers on paper allows me to connect with and preserve the memories I have from my childhood that revolve around long hikes and flower-filled pastures. Recently, my goal was to connect my recollection of memory with prayer, and to use my personal understandings of the bible verses I am inspired by during prayer to fuel a deeper response to those memories. This practice has allowed me to grow in mindfulness, being more aware of how I affect others and how I perceive the world around me. The materials I have chosen to work with stem from my interest in processes that are teachable for all ages, as my goal for the future is to work towards a Master’s in Education.
