Abstract
Although there has been a flurry of recent court cases that acknowledge the important role of state governments in tribal affairs, relatively little scholarly attention has been given to how American states actually relate to Native individuals, communities, or institutions. One way to begin outlining the nature of modern state-tribal relationships is to explore the highest laws within each state and see what these laws have to say about Native Americans. This article does just that, delving into the current state constitutions of all fifty states in the United States to better understand how these documents structure state governmental relationships with Native tribes.
