Abstract

The design of public spaces and buildings presents barriers for individuals of abilities, leading to reduced occupational engagement. Occupational therapists are well suited to mitigate the obstacles presented by the physical environment and promote occupational engagement and overall well-being. Although prominent in home design and modification, occupational therapy’s role in the design and creation of public spaces is virtually nonexistent. Therefore, the author set out to explore the public space design team and process and advocate for occupational therapy’s role in public space design. The overarching goals for this capstone project are 1) to create a mock proposal for a community space from an occupational therapy perspective and 2) to create advocacy materials that promote the inclusion of occupational therapists on the interprofessional public space design team.
